Common Medications for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS-D)

If you have IBS-D, that is, the diarrhea predominantly type of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, then these medications might be something you should ask your doctor about.

Elavil - an anti-anxiety and anti-depressant that has been successful in treatment of IBS-D. It calms the otherwise nervous/stressed intestine-brain connection.

Imodium - well known over the counter medicine that slows down the intestinal movements.

Lomotil - another common medication for diarrhea, whether it's caused by IBS or something else. Slows down movement and has a calming effect, although also makes people a bit drowsy.

Rifaximin/Xifaxan - an antibiotic that is taken for 14 days every 4-6 months. Kills bacteria in your intestines that can cause IBS.

Take care!
